By Akemi Nazume

“Of course Liz can go with you! I’m so happy she made a friend on the first day of school!” she replied, and started washing dishes

As we walked down the path to my house, Liz kept looking around. “Are you okay?” I asked, holding Salem. “Yeah, I’m O.K., I guess, its just I have a weird feeling. Like something’s watching me.” She replied, glancing over her shoulder. “Is it always like this?” she asked. “Sometimes. There are wolves around here, but they’re friendly. I should know, they saved my life.” I said, looking sideways to see her reaction. Startled, she said, “Wolves? You’re sure they’re friendly? And they saved your life?!”
“Yeah. They did. The day after I moved here. A man, or something like a man, attacked me. I can almost never sleep during the full moon, so I went exploring. I found some flowers, Moonflowers, and I felt a presence behind me. When I looked around, I saw him. His eyes were hard to see at first, but when he looked at me, it seemed he was looking straight to my soul. His eyes were blood red, and they held me in a trance. Then, to my left, howling erupted from the night. A giant wolf, jet black, leaped out of the forest, snarling. That broke the trance. I bolted from the field, never looking back, with the wolf by my side. The man didn’t follow me. And I never saw him again.” I completed my story, leaving Liz speechless. “I had an experience like that once.” She murmured, lowering her eyes. “Except Precious was the one who saved me.” Liz obviously didn’t want to talk about it, and we walked in silence till we arrived at my house. Seeing it, Liz caught her breath, whispering, “Woooahh…”
“Like it?” I asked. “I didn’t think it would be so big.” She said, wide eyed. “Yeah, the first floor is the kitchen, living room, and my moms master suite. The second floor is all mine, and the third is sorta the attic right now. But sometimes I go up there to draw and think.” I replied. Suddenly, Liz shot out her arm, pointing wildly. “Look! On the porch!” She shouted. “A wolf! A black wolf! Just like in your story!” I looked, and, sure enough, a wolf was on the porch. Seeing us, he stood up, wagging his tail. Liz started to walk forward, but I put my arm in front of her. “Wait.” I said, crouching down. Almost as if reading my mind, Liz did the same. The wolf trotted forward, and we put our hands out at the same time. As he sniffed mine, a warm, tingly feeling shot through my body. The wolf trotted away and didn’t look back. “What was tha-“ Liz started to say, but stopped as we both felt the crushing feeling to run, run and never come back. As one, we sprinted to the door. I unlocked and threw it open in one motion as Liz rushed inside with me after her. We slammed the door and stood with our backs against it, panting heavily. “What…was that?” Liz asked between breaths. “I…don’t know.” I replied, “But whatever it was, it’s gone now. I think.” After looking through the curtains, I said “We should start on dinner now.” Liz looked at me, “O.K.”
As we worked on the spaghetti sauce, we heard a car pull up in the driveway. Liz and I both went to the door to greet my mom, and I unlocked it. What we saw was what seemed a mountain of bags greeted us. “Amaya? Can you help me with this? I went shopping after work.” Came the muffled voice of my mom. “Sure Mom.” I said, taking some of the bags. “And Mom? There’s someone I want you to meet.”
“Alright, alright. Just let me put these down.” She grunted, dropping the boxes on the couch. “Okay, who is this?” She said, looking at Liz. I put the bags on the couch, too and said, “Mom, this is Liz. She’s new at school, and I invited her over for dinner. Spaghetti and meatballs.”
As we ate dinner, Mom was obsessed with asking Liz questions about her life in Britain. I felt like I was an observer, watching them like they were on T.V., until I noticed Mom was asking me a question. “What?” I blinked my eyes, trying to remember what she said. “I asked if Liz was going to stay the night.” She repeated. “I don't know. Would you?” I directed this at Liz, wondering what she would say. “Hmm, I would like to, but isn’t tomorrow a school day?” Liz asked. “Well, I know you girls will go to sleep on time, won’t you, Amaya?” Mom obviously wanted Liz to stay. “Actually, Mom, Liz and I have a homework assignment that we need to work on.” I gave Liz a meaningful look, and Liz helped me by saying, “Yes, Mrs. Graves, an English assignment. In fact, we should probably start on it now.” We dumped our dishes in the sink and went upstairs.
“Okay, why did we just lie to your mum back there?” Liz demanded as soon as we sat on my bed. “’Cuz I want to know your story. The one with your cat.” I said. “Oh, right.” She started her story staring at one of my pillows. “Well, I was thirteen, and I was riding my bike in the woods at the back of my house. Precious was in the basket, because she liked riding there. All of a sudden, one of my tires blew out. I skidded off the path, and barely managed to keep the bike from crushing Precious. When I checked the tire, I noticed the cap that held in the air was gone. I heard a rustle behind me, and a man was there, holding out the cap. I took it, and after I put it back on the tire, I turned around to thank him. As a habit, I looked at his eyes as I thanked him. That was a mistake.” At this she laughed nervously. “I was captivated. Like a trance. He held out his hand, and I reached forward. But then a splitting pain erupted in my leg. At first, I thought Precious had decided to use me as a scratching post. But then she gave me a look that meant ‘If you don’t get me home right now, you are going to be in big trouble.’ I jumped on my bike and rushed to get home. When we got there, Precious licked my leg where she scratched me, as if to say ‘I’m sorry.’ That night I couldn’t sleep.” Liz glanced at me. “And that’s the end of my story.” I lay back, looking at the ceiling, and said, “Funny how in both stories, animals saved our butts.”
“Yeah.” Liz murmured, “Funny.” I mused on what to do for a bit, and then an idea burst in my head. “I know!” I shouted, startling Salem and Liz, “I’ll check the internet! You can find almost anything there.” Liz looked at me like I was brilliant. “That’s a really good idea, Amaya, but how are we going to get to the computer without your mum knowing? I noticed it when we came inside.” She apparently didn’t notice my laptop. “Easy,” I said, “We use my laptop. It’s on the desk.” I pointed, and Liz clapped her hand on her head.
I typed ‘Strange encounters with humanoid creatures’ in the Google search engine and clicked ‘Vampires: Encounters with the Undead’. It turned out to be a book in a store called ‘Rare and Antique Books’ in my town. “10013 Anderson Lane” Liz read the address. “Well, we might as well give it a try. How many bikes do you have?” she asked, meaning to go there immediately. “Two. You can use my Moms’.” I said starting down the stairs with Liz following me. My Mom was sewing. We tried to sneak out, but with no luck. “Where are you going?” Mom wanted to know. “We’re getting a book for our project.” I said, moving towards the backdoor. “It’s really important.”
“Well, Okay. Just be back soon.” She said going back to her sewing. We went outside and got the bikes. “I can’t believe that worked!” Liz exclaimed as soon as we were on the way to Anderson Lane. I turned a corner and swerved to avoid a person walking on the side of the road. “Sorry, Sir!” I called over my shoulder as we zoomed into the night. We reached the shop soon after that. “Wow. That didn’t take as long as I thought.” I said as I parked the bikes near a lamppost and locked them. A shape I thought was a statue next to the door moved. The wolf with Salem on his back came forward. We stared wide-eyed. Salem jumped into my arms and the wolf nudged my hand. I looked at Liz. “I think they want to come in with us.” I said, and she nodded. We pushed open the door and walked inside.
It was dark, and smelled musty. But there was something else, under the smell of books, something I couldn’t place. “Hello?” Liz called. “Who is it?” A voice called out from the darkest corner of the shop. An extremely cute 16-year old looking boy came out. “Are you looking for something?” He asked. “Y-yeah. We’re looking for a book called ‘Vampires: Encounters with the Undead’.” I managed to say, captivated by his beauty. He looked like one of those male models that you always hear about but never see. “Oh, well you’ll have to ask my brother for that.” He said while calling over his shoulder, “Fredrick! There’s a customer in need of a book!” A second boy who also looked 16 came out from the back. The first boy turned back to me, “My name’s David.” The second boy, who was also cute, but not as cute as David, said, “Still hitting on every girl that comes in here, David?” David blushed, and stammered, “S-sorry, Miss, i-its just you’re c-cute.” I smiled at that, but didn’t answer. “What are you looking for?” Fredrick asked Liz, smiling in a very flirty manner. “Vampires: Encounters with the Undead.” She said, looking down, but she obviously liked Fredrick, too. “Oh, I’m not allowed to flirt with girls, but Fred can?” David teased, poking Fredrick. “It’s not like I’m flirting with every girl that comes in here, like you are!” Fred retaliated the poke, and a poking match ensued. “Boys! Boys! We just need a book! Not a show!” Liz and I pulled them apart. “Liz! Curb your boyfriend!” Liz blushed, “He’s not my boyfriend! He’s just-” Fred turned around “But can’t I?” He stroked her cheek. “Uh, uh...” Liz stammered. “Come on! We’re taking you girls to dinner!” Fred started marching Liz towards the door, with David marching me behind them. “Wait! What about our book?” I asked, twisting in David’s arms, which were very strong, by the way, and said, “We won’t go out with you unless we get our book!” David laughed and reached for a shelf, “Here’s your book. Now will you go with us? Or have you already had dinner, too?”
